Checkhouse at Jerónimos Monastery

Technology at the service of preserving national heritage.

September 2025

The iconic Jerónimos Monastery, one of the greatest symbols of Portuguese history and culture, is undergoing a meticulous technical inspection. In an operation that combines respect for the past with the technology of the future, Checkhouse is initiating an inspection process to guarantee the preservation and longevity of this building, classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Built in the early 16th century by order of King Manuel I, the Monastery is a testament to the rich cultural, spiritual, and artistic heritage of Portugal. Over five centuries, it has withstood political, social, and environmental transformations, remaining a landmark of the country and a point of reference for visitors from around the world.

Monuments of this size and importance require continuous attention to their structural and material preservation. The Monastery has been the subject of long and complex restoration and conservation work, carried out over decades, to guarantee its authenticity and safety in the face of the demands of tourism and the threats of time and climate change.

Using state-of-the-art equipment, the Checkhouse team is creating a detailed photographic record of the Monastery's state of conservation. With the help of these tools, they are identifying pathologies such as cracks, infiltrations, or material degradation. The goal is to create a technical report that will serve as the basis for a conservation and maintenance plan, ensuring that the Jerónimos Monastery remains in perfect condition for future generations.
